A useful legal analysis begins by identifying the precise question, the decision-maker and the practical decision that must be made. Separate the client’s stated concern from the legal issue it raises, and confirm the relevant date, jurisdiction and material supplied. Do not answer a broader question than the evidence supports. In an interview, explain how you would clarify the instruction, identify urgency and deliverable, and flag missing facts before researching. This shows disciplined issue-spotting and helps prevent a technically correct answer from being irrelevant to the decision in front of the client.

02Reason from authority and evidence

A defensible answer distinguishes the source of each proposition. Identify the applicable legislation, instrument, policy or precedent in the supplied materials, check its status and wording, and connect it to verified facts. A summary or heading can help locate a provision but cannot replace reading the relevant text and qualifications. Where the record is incomplete, state what can be concluded now and what depends on further evidence. Interviewers are looking for transparent reasoning, not a recital of legal vocabulary. Explain the route from authority, through facts, to a bounded conclusion.

Worked workplace example

A draft note says a power applies to every contractor, while the cited provision names a narrower group. I would verify the full provision and its definitions, compare the person’s status with the record and revise the note to preserve the distinction. Common mistake：A provision’s title or a familiar shorthand is not enough to establish its full scope or application.

Clients need a usable decision, not only a list of concerns. Present realistic options, the legal and practical considerations attached to each, the facts that could change the assessment and a reasoned recommendation within the instruction. Distinguish a legal constraint from a policy choice or operational preference. Use calibrated language: explain whether a point is established, arguable or dependent on further checking. A concise written answer should make the conclusion, reasons and next action easy to find. In interview examples, show that you can be candid about risk while helping the decision-maker move forward lawfully and responsibly.
