01Confirm the reference before comparing measurements

Survey results are meaningful only when their reference, units and purpose are understood. Before comparing coordinates or levels, identify the coordinate system, datum, units, point identity, measurement date and whether the figures refer to the same surface or dataset. Ask what decision the comparison supports. A plausible numerical match can still be invalid if its basis differs. In an interview, explain these checks before calculation and state assumptions plainly. This demonstrates professional care across land, building, quantity or valuation contexts without implying that every surveying discipline uses the same methods or authority.

02Explain precision, accuracy and uncertainty

Precision describes the spread or repeatability of observations; accuracy describes closeness to an accepted value or true position. Repeating a measurement may reveal consistency but does not remove a shared systematic error. Explain the relevant method, control checks and uncertainty in terms suited to the decision. If a result sits near a tolerance or depends on an assumption, flag that limitation rather than rounding it away. Interviewers want to see that you understand the quality of evidence and can communicate what a measurement does and does not establish.

Three readings cluster closely around 10.10 m while the accepted reference is 10.00 m. I would say the readings are repeatable but differ from the reference, then review the reference, setup, units and possible systematic effects. I would not call the result accurate simply because the repeated readings agree.

A defensible survey record lets another qualified person follow how an observation became a result. Preserve original readings, point labels, units, instrument or source details required by the applicable method, calculations, checks and any adjustment. Correct a transcription error transparently rather than overwriting history. Use appropriate independent checks and review arithmetic before issuing a plan or report. In an interview, show that record quality is part of the technical result, not clerical work added afterwards. Follow the specific employer and discipline’s record procedures; do not imply every survey product has the same statutory status.
