Complete scenario rehearsal
You are updating a shared register before a reporting deadline. The register shows 14 applications, while the source batch contains 15 references; one row also has an unclear date. A colleague asks you to send the total immediately. What would you do?

Reveal the worked response
I would not send the figure as final while the records do not agree. I would confirm that the register and batch cover the same period, count the 15 source references and compare each one with the register using its unique reference. I would identify the missing entry, add information only when supported by the source and authorised process, and keep the unclear date marked for clarification rather than guessing. I would tell the colleague that the current total is being checked and give a realistic update point if I can confirm one. If the deadline requires a provisional figure, I would ask the responsible officer whether it may be reported with a clear caveat and unresolved item. Before sharing, I would check that the spreadsheet formulas, filters and saved version are correct, and use the approved location. This keeps the report useful without presenting uncertain data as verified.

- What would you do if the date could affect which reporting period an application belongs to?
- How would you leave the register for a colleague taking over the check?
Check your answer
- Did I reconcile the source references rather than guess?
- Did I preserve uncertainty about the date?
- Did I communicate status and use the approved record?
