Complete scenario rehearsal
A fictional patient says they received two different explanations from members of the team and asks you to confirm which one is correct. The information available to you is incomplete. How would you respond at interview level?
Say your own answer before opening the example.
Reveal the worked response
I would begin by listening and acknowledging that inconsistent explanations can be confusing. I would ask what each person said and what the patient needs clarified, while separating their account from information I can verify. I would check the relevant record and consult the responsible clinician or team member rather than inventing an explanation. I would state clearly what is known, what remains uncertain and who will provide the appropriate clarification. I would avoid promising a clinical outcome or giving a treatment direction based on this limited scenario. I would protect the patient’s privacy, share only relevant information through the employer’s authorised channel and make sure responsibility for follow-up is clear. If I identified a communication gap, I would raise it respectfully with the team and consider how to prevent conflicting messages in future. My answer is about listening, accurate communication, teamwork and accountability; any clinical assessment or treatment decision belongs to the responsible professional using current guidance and local procedures. I would tailor my interview examples to the employer and specialty because doctor roles and recruitment arrangements differ.
Try the follow-up questions
- What would you do if the responsible colleague were temporarily unavailable?
- How could the team reduce the chance of conflicting explanations?
Check your answer
- Did I clarify rather than guess?
- Did I keep clinical decisions with the responsible professional?
- Did I protect privacy and assign a follow-up owner?
