Complete scenario rehearsal
In a secondary science class, a short written check shows that many students can repeat a term but cannot use the results table to support an explanation. A few students have completed the task quickly. What would you do next, and how would you follow up?
Say your own answer before opening the example.
Reveal the worked response
I would pause before moving to the next concept and use the responses to identify the shared gap: students can recall the term but are not connecting a claim to evidence. I would briefly model one example by selecting a specific observation in the table and explaining how it supports a sentence, making the reasoning visible. I would then ask the class to try a new, short example individually so I can see whether the model transferred. Students who still need support could use a prompt that asks them to cite one row or measurement, while students who finished quickly could compare two pieces of evidence and explain which gives stronger support. I would not assume that speed means mastery. I would review the second responses, note which students need follow-up under normal school practice, and adjust the next lesson if the same gap remains. This keeps the subject goal intact, responds to evidence and gives each learner an appropriate next step.
Try the follow-up questions
- What would you change if the second check showed the same misunderstanding?
- How could you record this evidence without creating unnecessary workload?
Check your answer
- Did I identify the actual learning gap from student work?
- Did I keep a shared goal while offering different support?
- Did I plan a check that shows whether learning transferred?
