Complete scenario rehearsal
A fictional project is close to issue. A late supplier substitution appears to fit the drawing dimensions, but its supporting performance data and interface check are incomplete. The project manager asks you to approve it to protect schedule. How do you respond?

Reveal the worked response
I would clarify what approval is being requested and whether I have authority to give it. I would not approve the substitution solely because its dimensions appear to fit. I would compare the proposed item with the documented design basis, identify what performance evidence is missing and list the interfaces, drawings or checks that may be affected. I would explain the schedule pressure and the technical uncertainty separately, then ask the responsible designer or authorised design lead to assess the evidence under the project’s change and quality process. I would present practical options, such as obtaining the missing information, reviewing an alternative or adjusting the issue sequence, with the implications of each. I would keep the affected item from being represented as fully verified until the required checks and approval are complete, following the authority applicable to my role. I would document the request, decision and revision trail and communicate the outcome to the team. I would avoid declaring a legal or statutory conclusion unsupported by the scenario. This response shows controlled design revision, evidence-based quality and respectful escalation; exact engineering checks depend on the discipline and project.
