Complete scenario rehearsal
A parent reports that their child feels left out during group work and says the child has stopped volunteering answers. You have not noticed an obvious incident. How would you respond?
Say your own answer before opening the example.
Reveal the worked response
I would thank the parent for raising the concern and ask for a specific example or timeframe, without suggesting that the child’s account is mistaken. I would explain what I have and have not observed, then review relevant classroom work and participation patterns and speak with appropriate colleagues. I would check in with the student privately using open, respectful questions and avoid labelling the cause. If the information indicates a wider support or safeguarding concern, I would follow the school’s designated process and share details only with people who need them. I would agree a practical next step, such as monitoring group participation or adjusting roles, with the responsible colleagues and tell the parent when and how we will review it. I would not promise a particular disciplinary or placement decision. A factual note would record the concern, evidence checked, agreed action and owner. This keeps the conversation collaborative and focused on the student’s learning and wellbeing.
